Guest can't connect to internet in bridged mode
Sun, 05 Sep 2010 17:02:01 GMT
I forgot to paste the ipconfig /all from the guest and host, please have a look. I think the setup is correct. I had to remove parts of the actual IP addresses, but if you think you need it all I can surely send them to you by email or PM.

The IP that I gave the guest works fine if I add it to the host, and by adding I don't mean changing, but actually adding it on the network interface.
I can't assign the xxx.xxx.xxx.14 IP to the guest because this is the IP of the dedicated server and many services will not work.

VMDK repeatedly dissappearing after suspend
Sun, 05 Sep 2010 13:05:05 GMT
Thanks for the suggestion. But...
That is a reasonable suggestion given what I stated so far, but virtualbox have been running on that same disk for quite a few weeks now and there have never been any problems there. I do the same thing there. Suspend guest, then suspend host.
I just reinstalled player now since I was not satisfied with the performance in virtualbox, and now it happened again.
The log I provided was the latest one, but I suspect that there should have been more...
I am not an expert on NTFS, but I dont understand how a missed flush could wipe away the file. Sure some stuff in it might not be up to date but it should not be totally gone. Maybe if Player does some kind of renaming at the end of the session... I dont know.
To remedy this I added "sync" from MS technet, which is run on both host and guest at suspends.
Time will tell if that fixed this..
I'll be back if not.

In one of my Windows XP Virtual Machines I run Wireshark in promiscuous mode without any problems.

Is this expected performance?
Sat, 04 Sep 2010 18:08:19 GMT
Currently this scenario runs somewhat (barely?) acceptably on an E8400 +8GB +2x Raid 0 + GTX260 directly on the host OS.
Wow - I guess for such requirements as you have running this in a VM will not make you happy.
I am sure you are better off running this on real metal.

thinkpad scroll button on ubuntu 10.04 guest
Sat, 04 Sep 2010 14:43:27 GMT
I tried a whole bunch of tsuff, and I think I finally figured it out. In:
C:/Program%20Files/Synaptics/SynTP/TP4table.dat
The default setting is:
,,vmware-vmx.exe,,,MKSEmbedded,SendInput,0,9
(actually it might be slightly different than that)
This seems to work:
,,,,*,MKSEmbedded,SendInput,0,13
I suspect the "13" doesn't really do anything. What started making it work was changing vmware-vmx.exe to *, which is kind of odd.
Unfortunately, emulate3biuttons doesn't work with vmmouse now, which is a major bummer.

Unity breaks in VMware Payer 3.1 after 1 week (repeatable)
Sat, 04 Sep 2010 01:24:31 GMT
Thanks for the feedback.
I do not think it is related to other software, because once I repair the VMWare Player installation, Unity works again with the exact same set of install software/services as before. If there was a program blocking Unity, that would always block, not just start blocking after a week. Right? Checked into your question and no mobile broadband is installed.
I think I figured out what is causing Unity to start failing.
About once a week Windows 7 reboots to update its software. It reboots when the guest OS is still running and I think it forces the shutdown too quickly. After that happens, Unity breaks on the next attempt.
Tested this 3 times and it seems to be the problem. If the guest is running, and I tell windows 7 to shutdown (or pull the power), then the next time the guest is loaded Unity will stop working. For the 3rd test I put the guest into hibernate while Unity was running, and on resume it didn't work either.
This seems to be a problem in VMWare Player itself. My guess is something or some status is getting set when Unity starts, and because of the forced shutdown Unity does not properly exit and that is blocking the next attempt to enter Unity. Again, reinstalling VMWare fixes the issue.
Does that make sense? It's my best guess.
So my solution is to be more careful about fully shutting down the guest (and not using hibernate) before the host OS goes down. (Which I should do anyway).
Hope this helps, please let me know if you have any ideas on how to continue exploring how to fix this.
Tom

ctrl - alt behavior

Thanks for replying, I tried your suggestion - I uninstalled and re-installed the tools, chose 'complete installation', twice. The ctrl + alt is still required.

Linux VM from Player 3.1 to ESXi 4
Fri, 03 Sep 2010 21:33:03 GMT
very likely your Linux VM will run in ESX but you still use the wrong vmdk-type
try to import the vmdk with vmkfstools - or if that does not work - post details about the vmdk you uploaded
